Flatpak

Flatpak is a way of distributing applications on Linux.

Version

flatpak --version

This documentation assumes you are on flatpak 1.2 or later.

Install

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexlarsson/flatpak

sudo apt update

sudo apt install flatpak

Usage

List installed applications...

flatpak list

flatpak list --app

Get more info on an installed application (use application name from list output)...

flatpak info org.gimp.GIMP/x86_64/stable

Find an application to install...

flatpak search gimp

Install a flatpak application...

flatpak install gimp

To update an application...

flatpak update org.gimp.GIMP

Use Application ID as shown in output of flatpak list --app

To uninstall an application...

flatpak uninstall org.gimp.GIMP

Run an application...

flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP

Troubleshooting

To remove runtimes and extensions that are not used by installed applications, use:

flatpak uninstall --unused

To fix inconsistencies with your local installation, use:

flatpak repair

To find out what changes have been made to your Flatpak installation over time, you can take a look at the logs (since 1.2):

flatpak history

If "Ubuntu Software" says it can't install an update to software managed by Flatpak (especially if Flatpak reports the software is already at the latest version)...

sudo flatpak update

killall gnome-software
