At end of marketing, a machine is still eligible for service and IBM policy is to support for at least five years after removal from marketing wherever possible. There are, however, important considerations regarding the provision of upgrades and expansions post-marketing. In short, it will not be possible to perform upgrades or add features that require a change to the installed hardware. Field install features and conversions that are delivered solely through a modification to the machine's microcode are available for a further year, meaning that everything which is already in the machine will be able to be activated during the next year. Capacity on Demand offerings will be usable until their expiration date and cannot then be converted to permanent capacity.
